Closets and Storage
One of the biggest reasons for a cluttered home is the lack of storage space. And to get the kind of storage space that their growing families may need many homeowners will spend thousands of dollars renovating or even buy a new home. Others rent extra space costing hundreds of dollars a month in self-storage facilities.
For those who do not have the money to move or rent a storage area building a storage shelving unit in the basement or garage may be the very next best idea. A simple storage closet with a 12” wide shelf does not sound like much but build that over a ten foot wall from floor to ceiling and you've got almost 80 cubic feet of storage space. If you can carve off 18” from the room, which is only six inches more, the storage potential goes up to 120 cubic feet. Now you have room to build a huge closet to store clothes on hangers and sports equipment, or to put up metal storage shelving along the wall.
Wall storage can be anywhere you have a nook or indentation in the wall. A bathroom medicine cabinet is just such a great storage idea and this concept can be transferred to almost anywhere in the home. This is especially true if the space behind the wall can be “cannibalized,” like a furnace room, for example, where you might be able to get 24” + the 3 1/2” for the stud. A door can hide this indentation and now you have over 30 cubic feet of space. By adding a storage organizer you can store a lot of possessions in an organized fashion for easy retrieval.
Homeowners in northern areas have the unpleasant chore of going outside to get fuel for a wood stove. Even covered with a tarp seasoned wood stick together and they may need to get three armfuls.
